Yes, it leaves a white cast which is stronger the more product you use. That is NOT the fault of the sunscreen. It's just the nature of the ingredient zinc oxide, and if you want the calming and sun-blocking benefits you just have to put up with some whiteness. I've gone out in public with the white cast a few times and it's not horrible but it does make me look more fair and gothic than usual, so instead, here's how I deal with it: I work it in fast and don't rub more than necessary. Then when it's set, I buff a bit of Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable SPF 50 Powder on top to even out the white cast. (The Colorescience powder is kind of expensive in its original dispenser but I just bought the refill and swirl it in a glass with a kabuki brush. It comes in different shades, which you can see on their website, and Amazon has reasonable prices on the refills.) The effect is natural looking and leaves no hint of white cast, and provides me with a LOT of sun protection -- 50 SPF layered on top of 30 SPF! And all that while not irritating my skin or giving me acne? I consider it a miracle.
Another sunscreen hack I've been doing that is working well for me is to add a small squirt of moisturizer and mix in my fingers just before applying, which helps it slip a bit better and have a little bit of moisturizing factor -- I've been using a squirt of Hyalogic Episilk PHA hyaluronic acid serum but I bet you could use any moisturizer you like -- and then I do the powder step.
Anyway, if, like me, you have tried everything and thought that you would never find a sunscreen with natural ingredients that felt good on your skin and didn't make you look greasy and ridiculous, give this one a try.
I was happy with my second bottle as well, but on the third bottle, I received an entirely different sunscreen product from DERMA-E. I didn't notice that it was a different type of sunscreen until I had been using it for about a week, and at that point I didn't feel that I could return it. I also desperately needed it; I use it daily to protect my skin from the harsh California sun.
With the arrival of this last bottle, I'm just disgusted. This time, I did receive the correct item, but the sunblock functions completely differently. As I try to apply it to my face, it peels right off, in little sticky, flaky bits. I've tried everything: exfoliating my face first, letting the sunblock sit, trying to apply it with a little water, applying it super fast; nothing works! It is a complete waste of money because I can't trust that any is even getting on my face, and it's completely impossible to wear under makeup.
So now I'm back to the drawing board. I currently have no sunblock to use, and I need to research a new brand of physical sunscreen. I'm also stuck with an almost completely full bottle that I have no interest in using. I am guessing I received a defective product, but after two bad experiences, I'm not willing to take the risk of wasting anymore money on this product. On to the next!
Secondly, mineral sunscreens don't absorb into the skin very well. So if you are wearing dark clothing, realize that brushing any part of your body upon which you've applied this sunscreen against your clothes is going to be likely to create a white streak on your clothing. Again, not specific to this product -- pretty much ALL mineral sunscreens do this. (I realize this item says it's for face, but it's easier for me to use one tube of product on my face and body, as opposed to using two separate products.)
That being said, as mineral sunscreens go, this is a decent product. It has staying power (just swipe a few fingers along the skin where you've applied it and you'll feel that it's still there a few hours later). It has a relatively smooth texture.
I didn't see the ingredients on the product page, so here they are:
Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide 12%
Inactive Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Propanediol, Glycerin, Methylcellulose, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Green Tea Leaf Extract (1%), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C, Stay-C® 50), Decyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
I like that it contains green tea extract and vitamin C; these contain/are antioxidants that should help protect a little bit against sun damage. There are no parabens or artificial dyes. It's non-drying and non oily (though there is a little residue, which is common with mineral sunscreens).
Regarding SPF values, this product is SPF 30 and blocks 97% of the sun's UV. That's not bad, and is so close to higher SPF values (SPF 45 blocks 98% of the sun's UV) that it's practically equivalent.
For a mineral sunscreen, this is an excellent product that can be used on face or body. It won't absorb as well into the skin as a sunscreen with synthetic ingredients, but it is comparable to other mineral sunscreens, plus it contains some antioxidants. And, it's unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
